Last night we hosted Rabbi Gershon Overlander from Chabad of Hendon, among the other speaker, Rabbi Kupperman gave a very clear explanation of the nuances this year with Pesach falling on Shabbat evening. You can watch it online on Vimeo here , the password is CLL.

We’ve got a number of Zoom events and other Pesach activities planned. You can see all the details here . We are excited to announce that, weather permitting, we will be davening daytime services outdoors during Pesach to allow more people to attend in a safer environment. We will also be able to hold indoor children’s services . Evening services will be held indoors.

For thousands of years, the approach of Pesach meant preparations for the sacrifice of the Pascal Lamb. Yet ankle-high rivers of blood flowing through the Holy Temple on Erev Pesach do not exactly fit with the beautiful images of a marble and gold structure that we conjure up in our mind whenever we think of the Beit Hamikdash.

Whatever our feelings, the sacrifices described in this week's parshah are no more and we must find a way to replace their service. The foremost way is through prayer. 'Prayers were instituted to replace the sacrifices' the Talmud teaches. The karbonot were always accompanied with prayer and confessing one's sins and this is now accomplished through our own tefillot.

Fasting became another way of gaining G-d's attention. One of the Talmudic sages recounts how he used to fast regularly and ask G-d to accept this diminishing of fat and blood as a replacement for the fats and blood of the korbonot. The logic is understandable; when we had the animals take our place, we were supposed to envision ourselves on the altar instead of the animal and be grateful that G-d had given us a way to atone for ourselves without forfeiting our lives. With the korbonot gone, the fasting was literally a sacrifice of oneself.

As bodies became more pampered, weakening them through fasting served as an impediment to keeping the mitzvot, not an incentive. Fasting has long since gone out of style as an approved way of personal service to G-d, with the exception of the Rabbinically mandated communal fasts.

When King Nebuchadnezzar, destroyer of the first Holy Temple, had a bad dream - a premonition of future punishment - he summoned the Prophet Daniel for help. Daniel saw the Jews suffering in exile and advised the King to redeem himself through charity. The Book of Daniel relates that Nebuchadnezzar's punishment was indeed delayed for a year.

Tzedakah is the ultimate in sacrifices. We take money that we have worked hard to earn, toiled over with our sweat and blood, and instead of using it for our own benefit we donate it to a worthy cause. Money that could have benefited our whole body is given to another. Little wonder that when the Talmud refers to 'the mitzvah' without any qualifications, it is talking about tzedakah.

We are in difficult financial times. People are asking where all the money has gone, surely someone must have it? I recently saw a beautiful explanation. This Sunday was Rosh Chodesh Nissan when the new tax revenues collected from all half-shekel tax would start to be used. It is taught that when G-d taught this commandment to Moses, he could not understand what G-d meant by a half-shekel, so G-d reached under His throne, plucked out a fiery half-shekel and showed it to Moses.

With the money now located - it is under G-d's throne - the problem just remains to access it. The Kabbalah teaches that every Jewish soul too is carved out from underneath G-d's soul. The money is therefore ours for the taking. How do we get back home? By returning to G-d, with extra acts of goodness and kindness and replacing the sacrifices with tzedakah we will be amply rewarded.

As Pesach approaches, there is a custom to donate to a 'maot chittim' fund. Literally 'money for the wheat,' these funds provide those in need with help making Pesach. It is hard enough to make Pesach without having to worry about where the money is coming from, but this year there will be more people doing more worrying. Tzedakah isn't just limited to what we can afford to give - halacha says the obligation to give is directly correlated to the need in the community - when more people are hurting we must all raise our game. help out those in need , and surely G-d will shower you with blessings from under His throne.

What is the Point of Animal Sacrifices?
Why would an infinite, all-knowing, omnipotent G‑d wish for people to offer up animal sacrifices? It seems to be a pointless waste of resources and needless dispensing of life.
 
 
Parshah in a Nutshell

Parshat Vayikra

G‑d calls to Moses from the Tent of Meeting, and communicates to him the laws of the korbanot, the animal and meal offerings brought in the Sanctuary. These include:

• The “ascending offering” (olah) that is wholly raised to G‑d by the fire atop the altar;

• Five varieties of “meal offering” ( minchah) prepared with fine flour, olive oil and frankincense;

• The “peace offering”(shelamim), whose meat was eaten by the one bringing the offering, after parts are burned on the altar and parts are given to the kohanim (priests);

• The different types of “sin offering” (chatat) brought to atone for transgressions committed erroneously by the high priest, the entire community, the king or the ordinary Jew;

• The “guilt offering”(asham) brought by one who has misappropriated property of the Sanctuary, who is in doubt as to whether he transgressed a divine prohibition, or who has committed a “betrayal against G‑d” by swearing falsely to defraud a fellow man.
